Fucoidan comes from the "slippery" part of brown seaweed, research indicates that it helps protect the seaweed from drying out when exposed at low tides, and protect the seaweed against bacteria, infections and viruses.
The main component of fucoidan was L-fucose 4-sulfate
The structure was 1,2-α-fucose, most of the sulfate groups were located at position C-4 of the fucose units.
The name "fucoidan" does not represent substances of a given structure, but it is a general term that refers to high-molecular polysaccharides whose main constituent is fucose. In addition to fucose, the saccharide chain that constitutes fucoidan also includes galactose, manose, xylose, and uronic acid.
Application
With anti-inflammatory and procollagen synthesis-stimulating properties, fucoidan shows promising effectiveness for treating atopic dermatitis , and alleviating allergic reactions. Research has demonstrated that fucoidan can limit allergy-induced inflammation and can be as effective as cortisone in combatting allergic dermatitis.
